Purpose of life...

This is a philosophical question which has been addressed or being addressed by almost every philosopher, scientist, religious head, cultural organization, sociologist, political leader and the list goes on. From Adi Shankara to Aristotle, from Budha to Bahai and from Kant to Carl Sagan every one had their say much to the satisfaction of their followers.

I have never seen anything more comprehensive than what Swami Vivekananda formulated which has become the motto of Ramakrishna mission. It had a dual aim for the service activities which is "Atmano mokshartham, Jagat hitaya cha".

The dual objective is "For one's own salvation and for the welfare of the world". The welfare of the individual is addressed in his salvation and that of his family, friends and community is addressed in the welfare of the world part.

Apart from its absolute comprehensiveness, I liked 2 other aspects it emphasized.
  1. Divinity of the soul and the sole objective of realizing it.
  2. A benign attitude that is Universal in nature without any class, sect, sex, color, religion, culture and country restrictions.
So every other activity and objective that we pursue should not only a subset of these goals but also should be well aligned to the above dual objectives.

Blessed are the ones who can understand their purpose of life and stay the course in that journey.

"அன்பும் அருளும் எங்கும் நிலைக்கட்டும்"
May the divine love and grace prevail everywhere!
